To help you
arrange your move easily and with the least worry, we have developed a suggested time-line
to follow. Not all these items will apply to your situation, and we are sure we may have
missed some, but we hope it gives you an idea of what is required.
Six to
eight weeks before the move:
Get price
estimates on truck rentals or moving companies. Book the
one you select.
Contact the IRS or
your tax advisor and determine which moving expenses could be tax deductible. (Remember to
save your receipts!)
Notify current
landlord of your intent to vacate.
Start to use
things that are difficult to move. e.g. frozen foods, other perishable items.
Five to six weeks before the move:
Consider holding a
garage sale or advertise in the local papers for those items you do not want to move.
Compile a list of
friends and relatives who should be notified of your new address.
Contact schools,
doctors, dentists, accountants, veterinarians etc to obtain copies of personal records.
Four
weeks before the move:
Determine if you
will need self storage for some of your belongings.
Get change of
address forms.
Send change of
address cards to friends, relatives, etc.
Contact utilities
companies and arrange for transfer of accounts to new address or disconnection at old
address and connection at new address.
Contact insurance
companies and arrange changes to motor vehicle insurance, renters insurance or homeowners
insurance.
Purchase packing
supplies and start packing those items you wont be needing before the move.
Decide what
furniture you may need to buy or rent for the new house.
Two
three days before the move:
Defrost your
freezer if moving a long distance.
Pack a box with
essentials that you will need immediately at your new home.
Confirm your
booking with the truck rental company or mover.
Confirm your
arrangements to have your children minded on moving day. (Don't forget about your pets!)
Moving
day:
Stay calm!
Ensure your
children and pets are safely cared for and out of the way while the movers are there.
Try to stay out of
the way and let the movers do their job.
Get excited about
spending your first night in your new home!
Enjoy your new
home!
