Interesting facts
about the Antelope Valley
Located about 60
miles north of Los Angeles on AV Freeway 14, the Antelope Valley covers about 3,000 square
miles, and has an estimated 300,000 inhabitants. Once you have left the congestion of Los
Angeles and hit the clear air of the valley, it will seem more like a desert oasis than a
wasteland. With a collage of thriving desert communities surrounded by the picturesque
mountains, and the rugged beauty of the Mojave Desert, it will seem like a refuge from the
hectic life of the big cities.
The Antelope
Valley consists of 17 communities, including Palmdale and Lancaster which are ranked
amongst the fastest growing cities in the country. The growing population, and the
amenities such growth brings with it, demonstrate the magnetic appeal of the
Californian High Desert.
Because of the
Antelope Valleys unique air corridors and excellent flying weather, the Air Force
and NASA have chosen it as a strategic location for their aviation and aerospace research.
This unique aeronautical testing cannot be conducted anywhere else in the world. In fact,
when driving through the valley, keep your eyes on the skies and, if you are fortunate to
be in the right place at the right time, you will probably see some of the most amazing
aircraft ever built flying right above you!
Beautiful,
pristine desert scenery separates the small and large communities of the Antelope Valley.
In the wintertime, snow caps the High Sierras to the north, and the San Gabriels to
the south, leaving the valley resplendent between them. With unlimited groves of Joshua
trees interspersed with the occasional sand dune, lakes and greener areas, the valley is
an oasis amongst scenic mountains. In the springtime the foothills become bright orange
with a covering of Californian poppies!
CLIMATE
The Valley weather
story is simple clear blue skies!
If you are a
pilot, expect to have about 360 flying days a year. If you like cloudless skies
expect about 225 a year, with only 140 partly cloudy days.
The average
monthly temperature is 61 degrees - very temperate, although winter can get quite cool at
night with temperatures in the high teens to low 20s. Winter daytime temperatures
are usually in the 50s 60s. Summer is a bit warmer with day time
temperatures into the 100s and night time temperatures dropping to the 60s or
low 70s. Beautiful balmy summer breezes waft across the valley on many summer
evenings!
Yes, we
do occasionally get snow in winter we average the huge total of 4" a year
(usually around Christmas or early January).
Rainfall is a
modest 8" a year and windspeeds of 15 mph or less are expected 75% of the year.
In all, this is a
marvelous climate for those who love low humidity, warm days and dry heat.
POPULATION PROFILE
The current
population evolved from a number of sources. A small percentage is believed to have
descended from the original settlers of the 1800s. More are descended from the
growth and expansion that occurred during the Second War, and still more are as a result
of the boom created by the aerospace industry.
One of the surges
in population growth followed the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake when thousands of people
needed affordable, easy to buy homes. The Valley met their needs exactly.
Other groups of
people moved to the Valley from Los Angeles during the 90s simply because they were
searching for safer streets and a safer place to raise their kids.
This growth of
population saw a growth in service type businesses follow in its wake, creating a growth
momentum that continues today!
The typical adult
resident of the Valley is aged between 25 and 54, although children under the age of 17
years make up about a third of the total population. According to the cities of Lancaster
and Palmdale, average household income is approximately $50,000 per annum. With 117,000
households making up the estimated population of 360,000 people, the average household
consists of 3 people.
By the way, the
projected population growth for the next ten years is estimated at 10.8%.
This is very high
in comparison to most other areas of the country.
