What should you look for when deciding which community to buy your home in?

Selecting a community to live in is a very personal decision. There are MANY factors that determine where you are going to buy a house, and to a large extent, that also determines what type of community you will be living in.

The best advice we can give is that you select a community that will allow you to best live your daily life. By this we mean, that it has to work with your lifestyle and meet the needs that you want from a community.

Many people choose communities based on schools and the proximity to good schools. Indeed, when you want to sell your house later on, this could be a very good selling point.

Other people select their community based on access to shopping, or transportation… or perhaps proximity to local facilities such as libraries, museums, sports fields etc. Maybe you need easy access to freeways and good access to commute to and from work?

Perhaps you enjoy the peace and quiet of rural communities, or the security of gated communities?

Whatever reason for choosing a community, it is important that you spend some time in that community before making the decision to buy a house there.

When you find a community that you like, spend some time there…walk around, talk to people that live there (after all, they know the most about the area and, if you buy a house there, they will be your neighbors).

Spend time in the community day and night… get a feel for how it works, how noisy it is, what the traffic is like at different times in the day and night. How do the streets feel at night? Do you feel safe there? Is it a happy bright community, or a sad tired community?

I guess this is best summed up as asking yourself… "Does this feel good to me? Would I be comfortable and happy living as a part of this community?"

Kent sez: “More than anything, you want to find a neighborhood where you feel comfortable. A professional real estate agent has local knowledge and can save you time by helping you identify your needs.”
